Aso Shrine Buildings Collapse

After two nights of earthquakes in Kumamoto, Japan, a large number of historically valuable building structures were severely damaged. Aso Shrine located in Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture was inevitably devastated. Aso Shrine, one of the oldest shrines as well as the famous tourist attraction in Japan, has been seriously damaged in the devastating earthquake that occurred in Apr. 16. The shrine’s romon (tower gate) and haiden (worshipping hall), which are officially designated as important cultural properties, completely collapsed. Moreover, the three shinden (halls) where gods are enshrined were also damaged.
